与《巴比伦柏林》相同的时代背景，展现了两次世界大战中场休息期间的德国众生相。主角的身份设定和故事线可谓极具讽刺性的潦倒落魄：空负博士学位而失业，一路向下的人生轨迹，以至救人反溺水的结尾都很难称为高光时刻。然而正是在这样不堪的表象下，对爱和美的追求才显得格外动人。
